The Yunnan tile cat (瓦猫 Wa mao*), traditionally positioned at the center of a roof's ridge, is a ceramic ornament named for its resemblance to a domestic cat. Folklore holds that this tile feline possesses the power to consume all sorts of evil spirits and demons, thereby serving as a guardian of the home. These ornamental cats are commonly placed atop rooftops, along the edges of eaves, or above doorways, symbolizing their role in safeguarding the household from diseases, misfortunes, and malevolent entities that may encroach from all directions.
